Can you go to jail for not paying back a payday loan?

I have paid so much interest that it more than covered the loan. I was in and out of the hospital and could not afford to pay anymore.
The payday loan place said they were calling the police and pressing fraud charges because it was over $500.00. Can they do this and is it legal ?
